How Car Diagnostics Works
Diagnostics reads what the car already knows, then proves it. Fault codes point to a system, live sensor data shows what that system is doing, and physical testing confirms which part is actually at fault before a repair is quoted.
Codes are clues, not verdicts
A code says a reading fell outside its expected range. It does not say which part caused it: a sensor, its wiring, or the mechanical part it watches can all produce the same code. Testing separates those three.
The diagnostic sequence
The sequence is fixed: record the symptom, read the codes, test the suspect system with live data and physical checks, explain the cause, then quote the repair. After repair, the system is retested to confirm the fix held.
- Symptom recorded: when it appears, and under what conditions
- Fault codes read from the car's systems
- Live data compared with expected values
- Physical checks on wiring, sensors and parts
- Retest after repair to confirm the result
Why diagnosis saves money
Changing parts on a code alone often replaces a sound part while the real fault remains. Paying for testing first avoids the dearer route: part after part, visit after visit, with the fault still there at the end.
Frequently asked questions
Will diagnostics tell me exactly what is wrong?
Diagnostics identifies the cause once testing is complete, not from the code alone. The result is an explanation of what failed, what it affects, and what the repair involves, followed by a quote before any work starts.
Can a fault code be cleared without repair?
A code can be cleared, but clearing does not fix the cause, and the light usually returns. A cleared code also erases evidence the diagnosis needs, so testing should come before clearing wherever possible.
How long does diagnostics take?
Timing depends on the system and on whether the fault shows itself every time. A fault that appears every time is usually proved faster than one that appears rarely. An expected timescale is confirmed at booking, never promised in advance.
Do I have to repair after a diagnosis?
No. Diagnosis and repair are separate steps, and the quote comes between them. You decide with the cause explained and the figures in front of you, including whether to proceed or to plan the repair later.
